With Thanksgiving only two weeks away, I’ve been getting questions about how I’m going to stay healthy during this typically gluttonous holiday. I do not have a certain diet that I’m following so I can’t say that I’m going to completely eat Paleo or Gluten Free, but I am going to try and keep starch heavy foods out of our meal meaning no bread, pasta and rice.
Luckily for my Thanksgiving meal, I will be completely in charge of what we are having since I am hosting this year. But for some of you that will be visiting family or friends see if you can bring a couple dishes that will help keep you healthy. Below is an idea of what we will be having this year and how to swap out traditionally unhealthy foods for something that you won’t feel guilty about eating.
I also rely heavily on recipes but also make adjustments to accommodate my lifestyle. Some of the recipes are ones that my Grandma has used for years and if I can find a link, I will post it so you can use it, but if not, I will be descriptive about what is in it!
My Sample Thanksgiving Menu:
Roasted Turkey with homemade mushroom gravy made from Turkey drippings
Plantation Style Green Beans (Green Beans with Bacon omit the mint)
Cranberry Sauce (Paleo Style)
We will not be having rolls but I will be making regular Mashed Potatoes for my kids and corn with butter. The great thing is they love all the things in the sample menu without substitutions. It probably has to do with all the bacon. I mean, who doesn’t love bacon?
My one big splurge this year will be Original Betty Crocker French Apple Pie. It is something that we have every year and I believe that we will be making healthy decisions during our dinner so a little sweet treat is not going to hurt anyone. Especially since it’s not a good idea to really deprive yourself of things that you truly want.
